Calendar on phone won't sync with calendar on tablet

I have a Samsung Galaxy S5 phone using Google calendar and a Galaxy Tab A tablet using Google calendar. If I add an event on my phones calendar it doesn't show up on my tablet and vice a versa. I must be missing something cause it seems that situation should be impossible
