Different cables only work with certain chargers

I recently bought a new multiscocket with USB 2.4 amp in it. I plugged in cable A and it started "charging", however after 30 mins it was still on 54%. I then plugged in cable B and within 20 mins it was on 85%. so the charger obviously works. I then used cable A with a different charger and it worked fine. What is going on here? Why do some cables only work with certain chargers?
