Why won't my galaxy s4 active charge and how do i fix it?

My phone has multiple problems, and i'm planning on replacing it soon, but ever since i got the phone last year, i have needed to switch out the battery every night for it to properly charge, and when i don't switch out the battery, instead of charging a little or staying where it is, it discharges. I'm visiting a relative and forgetfully didn't bring a spare battery, and now i plug in my phone, and it vibrates every so often, but doesn't show any sign of charging, and has been plugged in for several hours. How do i fix this problem? Thank you so much
