How to keep the icon counter until i read my message

My s8 plus updated last night, now when I get an sms, I get a notification at the top of the screen. Once i swipe right to get rid of it, it also gets rid of the counter on the message icon, even if the message hasn't been open. How do i keep the counter but swipe the notification from the top?
