Why is customized backgrounds on the Android messaging app gone with update??!

I just updated to Android 9.0 and with it my background in the messenger was gone (which has happened previously with updates) so I went to the menu to add my photo back to the messenger background and the option no longer exists. Is this because of the new night mode? This is really disappointing
