Why am I not receiving some text messages from other Samsung phones on Google messenger?

I switched to the google messenger app because I wasn't receiving text messages from iphones. Now when some people try messaging me from their Samsung phones I don't receive their messages, just a button with arrows that looks like I need to "download" their message. Why can't I read their messages?
