Why does Android Exchange Services use insane amounts of data?

I use Android Exchange Serviced on my tablet to check work emails. I don't receive many. It used 70+GB of data in less than a month. How is it possible? Syncing is set to 5 minutes. I cannot change that, because I have to be on call. What could be the problem?
