Why does the message 'unfortunately com.android.systemui has stopped working ' appear?

I have a Samsung Galaxy Note 2. The above message appeared and now I cannot close any open windows as I cannot get back to them. I have been to the phone shop and they suggest doing a factory reset on the phone. That would be a big step for me. can you suggest anything less dramatic please?
