Screen gets blocked and loose control of my device, why?

If device left inactive, something covers the screen and blocks me from seeing anything on 3/4 of the screen. I can'tanswer incoming calls or text measages. Very frustrating. Can't see my screen. Whatever it is flickers and wipes out my screen.
