Why does my phone instantly die, the moment I plug it in??

Idk what is happening. I got the phone when school started in September, fresh from the box. It is a Verizon Moto E4. It has been 7 months and it suddenly acts up. I have no idea what to do. Buy a new battery? Buy a new phone? All might be lost.. What is happening is; when I plug it in, the battery drops to zero, But when I try again a bit later it actually charges?! Why???
