What smartwatch is compatible with a Samsung Galaxy J1 android phone?

I want to purchase a smartphone for my husband but I don't want to get one that will not be compatible with his cell phone. Is there a Smartphone that will work with a Samsung Galaxy J1 phone? I have been told that a Zenwatch will work with ANY android phone. Is this true?
