Difference between turning off auto-sync and turning off internet?

Is there a difference between turning off the auto-sync feature and turning off the internet (mobile network or wi-fi)?

If I simply turn off the auto-sync feature, would I still be able to receive e-mails and chat app messages without opening/checking them first?

I know if I turn off the just the auto-sync I'd still be able to browse, but I just want to know how it affects the notification features.
