Why does my phone sometime not notify me of a text?

Most times the ringtone for incoming messages works perfectly. Then sometimes it just doesn't ring or even leave a notification messge. This usually happens when the person replies very quickly - say within 2 - 3 minutes. By which time I've locked the phone and am blissfully unaware they've replied.
