Portable bluetooth speaker volume

When I connect my Note 8 to my Bluetooth portable speaker I don't seem to be getting enough volume out of it. The phone seems to think that I am connected to a headset could that be the problem? I am using a app to listen to streaming radio and I drive a truck so I need more volume to hear the speaker over the loud truck. Is it possible to make the volume louder while connected to a portable speaker
