did the update delete photos off of sd card?

I did the update to marshmallow with my sd card inserted. when the update was finished it noticed I had an sd card and when I went to my gallery to view my pictures I could no longer see the pictures that were from the card and then slowly the number of pictures were decreasing. In a panic I turned the phone off and took out the sd card after taking out the battery. Did it delete my photos?
