How do I get messenger to notify with Top Icon but not With Popup message at top?

Ever since I got Android oreo, the notifications seem reworked and buggy. I just want messenger to notify me when I get a new message with the tiny icon at the top of the screen, but I don't want it to make a noise nor do i want it to popup a part of the message on the top of the screen. It used to do that fine, but not anymore. Can someone help? Thanks,
