Why do sound settings I set keep reverting back to previously set sounds?

I set "sound A" for Notifications. Now I want "Sound B." So I make the change and within a short time it's back to Sound A. I have a number of play store apps and feel like some other app is overriding the changes I'm making but I have no way to know which app trumps which. How can I sort this out without a complete factory reset. Given I'm on Android 7, there must be a good answer. Thank you!
