Intermittent charging but only when phone is switched on

I have an xperia x which has started charging intermittently when the screen is on, But not when the screen is off or the phone is switched off.
It charges fine when it's switched off.
I've tried various cables but makes no difference
Any ideas on the problem would be welcome
