Macbook not recognizing Nexus 6p.

I can't find my Type C to A USB to I bought a cheap one. However when i connect to he macbook, Android File Transfer doesn't recognize it and on the phone it starts charging but the usb options don't pop up. Is it my USB? or is there some setting on the macbook or Nexus 6P?
