Why my galaxy s5 opens up photos as a group message.

I have a samsung galaxy s5 from verizon, it's unlocked and I have a t mobile Sim card. Since the day I got the phone, whenever someone sends me a photo it instantly opens up a group chat between that person and I. I have tried to change the settings anf it shows no difference i dont think i was sold a bootleg phone as this is the only real problem i have with it. Everything else works perfectly. The videos I am sent also always appear in terrible quality. And when I check the senders phone its HD. At first this wasn't a very big problem for me but over time it's become unbearable. Help.
