Locked Samsung account

Hi bought a phone contract from mobile phones direct when it arrived I put my old SIM in and used it for a day it was on three network like my old SIM when three made it hard work to transfer my old no contacted mps and asked if I could cancel and go with voda phone contract so returned phone and received new one very happy then got email saying cosmetic damage can't cancel which there was none then got loads more emails saying can't cancel because Samsung account locked is this possible when the original SIM never went in and how could they know without a SIM been inserted ty
