vm records 3:59m of nothing for hangups

i get phone calls that I don't answer, so it goes to voice mail. they hang up, don't leave a message, yet I get notified of a 3:59 minute message. 3:59 after i reject the call I get notified of the vm - I look and see it is there and that it is 3:59 in duration, but there is no sound when I listen to it... this happens for all numbers that I reject where they don't leave a message. if they do leave a message, the appropriate duration is shown and I can hear the message... any idea what i can do to stop the vm from recording 3:59 min of nothing?
