Screen flash after opening email in gmail app

Clicked on what seems to be a spam email. Gmail app closed immediately, and screen blinked. LG device Android 8. Gmail app. When I go back to the email it is nothing but a blank email body. Was my phone just compromised or was it just an android and gmail bug?
