Why won't Android Messages search function work for text?

Trying to search text message history for a specific word(s) after typing the search string clicking the magnifying glass does not initiate the search.
Messages version 3.8.042
Android version 8.0.0
Samsung Galaxy S9
Using SwiftKey version 7.1.8.29
