Why won't my set notification sounds play when I get a text message

I have an LG G3 that started doing something odd. Regardless of what I have set for a notification, be it part of a song or a sound byte of any kind, when I get a message my phone just plays this series of tones. It was updated not too terribly long ago. Could the new update have done something to the app permissions for accessing my storage where I have these sounds saved? How can I fix this?
