I need to unlock an HTC hero sprint version, with Cyanogen Mod 7, Lock-Screen?

So, I have been cleaning my space and found an old phone that has a picture of my kid with my dead grandpa I really want to recoup. I don't want to re-set the phone. Its an HTC Hero, and Cyanogen Mod 7 all I want is to unlock the screen get my picture and give the phone for recycling. But, no luck what so ever. If you can help please., No it does not have a sim card, old phone sprint did not use sims back then, so no codes work. Any ideas? Tried to root but is not working for me.
