Tenor gif in text app search broken

I got the tenor gif app on my galaxy s7 edge. I'm using the stock messaging app. When I type # it brings up tenor but no matter what I search for with it it only brings up the trending gifs. Any ideas on how to get it to bring up what I searched for?
