Fb message and sms

If I use Facebook messenger as my primary messaging app, and combine SMS, both will be in one app with the texts as purple and fb messages as blue. If I wanted to send a fb message to an iPhone user, can I send them a message using SMS within the fb messenger app to text them or do I have to send a fb message to their fb
