Android Auto App how can I get it to work on an older phone system Kit Kat?

I have an Tracphone, Alcatel one touch, which is not scheduled for an upgate to the latest Android system, 8.1 Oreo, and is still using 4.4 KitKat. Can I get the Android App to download on my phone some way? I have a Crosstrek Subaru and we tried to get it to work but, was told my phone is incompatible. Is the a way with using a micro USB port or something? Or, do I just need to get a new phone?
