the notification keeps dinging when I open a message using google message app

I have a Moto G6 and use the Google message app. Whenever I open a new message the tone keeps sounding like it is stuck. Sometimes it stops, other times I have to exit out. It lasts for 30 seconds. I never had this issue before and have had the phone for 6 months.
