If I ad an SD card as "Adoptable Storage", will the device work properly if I ever remove it?

I recently received a Shield K1 as an anniversary gift from my wife. I would like to expand its storage with a memory card (SanDisk Extreme Plus 32 gb) but I have fears that this will negatively impact performance. If it does slow the tablet down more than I am comfortable with, will the table work if I remove it? What if the card wears out due to repeated use? Will this end the tablets effective life? Would the tablet still work, but only with a factory reset?
