Is Android Auto a software or hardware update to the car audio system

I have a Holden Commodore vf i ask Holden if they will be making Android Auto available for this vehicle. They have said not a this point in time. But no one will say if this can be done. If it's a software update then it can if it's a hardware update then it can't.
