Voice Command for Android Auto doesn't work for texting, phoning contacts

I have a galaxy S7 and android auto used to work for for accessing contacts. But now if I say "call joe" or "text joe" or whomever, I get a message back "not sure how to help you with "call joe" (or "text joe"). Driving directions work fine just not contacts. I tried uninstalling, reinstalling, all permissions are allowed, still no go.
