Is it normal for my phone to upgrade itself from Marshmallow?

So, I have an LG Phoenix 3. It previously had Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow when I first got it. A couple of weeks back, it underwent a software update, but what I didn't expect was it did a whole entire Android OS upgrade. Now it's Android 7.0 Nougat. Is this normal?
