Samsung Galaxy S II phone, garbled voices

I've "inherited" a Galaxy II T989D from my daughter, email & browser work ok but all voice rendition is garbled & distorted beyond recognition. Google searches suggest I should set noise suppression but it's already set, and unsetting it has no effect.

Anyone know a solution?
