Black box on the phone app

Hi my Dad has a Samsung Galaxy J1 and yesterday received a scam text message which he deleted straight away. Since then though there has been a black box around the phone app!
He has cleared the cache and switched it on/off but I'm not very technical so could anyone else shed any light on this please?
