Notifications keep resetting back to default after oreo update

Since I updated to Oreo I am having huge issues with my notifications from apps like what's app. When I customise the settings for my needs, after receiving a message the settings automatically revert to default & I keep getting pop ups of what a person has written in a message when I don't want that. Please help me to resolve this issue because it's becoming very frustrating. Many thanks
