Samsung Galaxy J3: the ringtone for the messenger isn't working. how can I fix it?

At first, both the phone and messenger weren't vibrating or ringing. I found out the mute functions was on and turned that off. now, the phone ringer works but the messenger refuses to ring or vibrate. how can i fix this? thanks
