Weak sound from audio jack - message about interface crash - 6P

When I plug anything into the audio jack of my 6P volume is drastically lowered and I get a message about interface crash when trying to raise volume. Used to be a message with warning about riscs of too loud sound into earphones and with the option to adjust volume according to your own wishes.
Does anyone know about this and hopefully a way to solve the problem?
