Why am I getting Google contacts that I've never contacted added to my contact list?

On my phone and laptop..I'm getting all kinds of folks added to my contact list that I have never contacted. Additionally some of the contacts are encrypted which makes it seem like I'm hiding something from my wife but I'm not contacting these people and don't know why they keep popping up on my contact list.
