Why Can't I Add Email Account That Was Deleted?

Recently discovered that my email trash had not been emptied. It was so large that I could not successfully remove them, so I followed the steps to DELETE the email account thinking that it would delete the associated files. Apparently it did not. When I tried to add the email account back in, I received the error message "account already exists." How can I get completely rid of the email account?
