Lg V20 headset mic not working but hands free does

when making or receiving a call no one can hear me when I talk using normal function. However the hands free seems to work normal as well as connected BT headsets and car mic. I have reset my phone back to factory thinking it may be software related and have purchased a new mic but not yet installed it until I know for sure it is hardware related. Anyone have experienced this and found the correct solution?
