Does the fingerprint only secure the boot up of the phone ?

Hi
I'm using Android 7.1 on a Moto G5 and I set up fingerprint + pattern to secure the phone.
I was quite surprised to discover that, once my phone is switched on (like it is 99.9% of the time), it's still possible to bypass the fingerprint recognition and just draw the pattern to unlock the screen...
So my question is...what is the fingerprint securising at all if anyone knowing my pattern can unlock the screen ???
